Overall, a disappointment.Update June 2011: having forgotten I'd read it before, I tried to read it againI can't deny this, it does not however detract from what is still an excellent readThere wasn't a huge chunk of the book spent in this period which kept it short and sweet.The beginning of this novel was great and the end was great, but the middle dragged a bitIt was just a little too drawn outCEvery time any of them went off by themselves, I was so scared for them, thinking something was going to happen to themI waffled between 3 and 4 and decided-what the heck, go for four.Lil and Coop became close as children when he would spend summers at his grandparents home in South DakotaAnd because Coop's family dynamics played a role in what happened between him and Lil, it took a little away from their relationship (that unsettled feeling between Coop and his parents)But that was beforeThe majority of the story felt like the refuge and, after a while, I just didn't care to hear anymore.I liked Lil and Coop a lot more as children than adults, and even as children, Lil's "This place is SO much better than the city even though I've never been to the city" got on my nerves

I love how most of this author's characters have such different careersSep 12, 2014 Melissa rated it really liked it I thought this book was great.Predominately a romance novel, Lil and Cooper are introduced as children, and fall in love as young adultsThe same thing happened with Farley and TansyHowever, the "love" story kept pissing me off so much that the suspense was dilutedI really enjoyed this book overallSeriously, the plot was somehow boring, characters were very shallow, & there was alot of exaggerationWhen Coop comes back, I can understand harsh feelings between both halves of the coupleLil, a Sioux descendant, was raised there with her sort of hippie-like parentsMy only issue was how Lil seemed to always be mad at Coop in the first half of the book
